Day 27

Roaring Fork Shelter to Hotsprings, NC – 18 miles
273.9 /

Today was a looooong day. We decided to wake up at 6 and hike in the dark. We left at 6:30 am, using headlamps. It was really chilly out. As the sub started to rise, the birds started chirping, and color returned to the trail. We made 5 miles by noon and had 2nd breakfast at the top of Walnut Mountain. We hiked about 15 miles to where we were going to stay, arriving at around 3 pm.

All day we were hearing good things about a huge 12 oz. burger in Hot Springs, which is a town in which the Appalachian Trail walks through the heart of. We were 3.2 miles from town, so we said screw it and left. We made it to town 1 hour later, whole body hurting, famished and at a diner. I ate bacon cheese fries, the 12 oz burger with tater tots, and blackberry pie with ice cream. A great ending to a long day!
