Day 25

Cosby Knob Shelter to Standing Bear Hostel – 10.7 miles
240.8 / 1944.5

I think Cosby Knob shelter was my favorite if the Smokeys. It was all laid in a nice valley looking out at the mountains, plenty of room to tent or lay your clothes out to dry, and the water was 10 feet away.

This was my last day of the Smokeys and it ended up being one of the most beautiful. It was only a 10 mile day and all downhill. We woke up to pouring rain which stopped around 8 and we left at 9:30.

As we went down in elevation we said goodbye to the pine forest and were back in the rhododendron hallways. At around 3000 feet we started to notice flowers blooming all around us. Right before the highway underpass we crossed a stream and I must have sat in the stream for about 25 minutes soaking my feet. It was hot out. 79 and humid.

We got to the highway underpass, the AT goes down to a road here and crosses a giant river the Pigeon Forge. It was beautiful, the trees had pink flowers blooming, the hills had white and yellow flowers and the stream had plenty of waterfalls.

We climbed a giant hill sweating profusely and in another .5 miles we made it to green corner road, where standing bear hostel was located. This place is awesome. It’s a lovely piece of land with a stream running right through it, cats, chickens, cabins and bunks. 2 fire pits, a kitchen and pantry. A horse shoe pit around back where people set up tents.

We drank the $2 PBRs and ate 4 hotdogs each and the played horseshoes while jamming to some music. I love this place, sad to leave, happy for what’s in front of me.
